David Moyes has admitted that despite a £60million transfer spend and four new signings he is still disappointed the club did not bring in a striker to compete with Michail Antonio.
The Hammers strengthened their squad with the arrivals of goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola, centre-back Kurt Zouma, midfielder Alex Kral and attacker Nikola Vlasic but are still yet to replace Sebastien Haller.
The Ivory Coast international departed the Hammers in January and despite two transfer windows passing West Ham still have only Antonio as a recognised centre-forward at the club.
Moyes has consistently pointed out that Andriy Yarmolenko and Jarrod Bowen can do a job as a central striker should it be required but the manager revealed he would have liked a striker had one been available.
"We would have liked to have brought in someone who could directly replace Mich during the window. [Someone] Who could possibly help him out but we just could not find anyone," the manager said.
"We have to try and find other ways of doing it and bringing other people who in we think can score goals in a different way.
"Keeping Mich fit is really important for us, we will not play him in all of the games but will try and use him at the right times."
Antonio's fine start to the season has seen him awarded the EA Sports Premier League Player of the Month award after four goals in three matches and Moyes was delighted for the Jamaica international.
"It says a lot about how he has started the season because his goals have been excellent for us. His play has been very good. He came back in good condition for pre-season, and he's worked hard through that period," the Scot added.
Moyes may be frustrated at the lack of a striker but he is pleased to have added a number of players to his squad who he believes will soon be pushing for first team starts.
"I did not see this as being a transfer window where I necessarily needed players who were [going to be] a backup," he said.
"I think we needed players who could add to the first team and give us competition. And with the amount of games coming up at this present time they will go into the first team and certainly add something as well."
The summer transfer window may have ended but when asked if there would be additions in January the boss replied he is never fully content with his squad.
"There is always work to do," Moyes said. "There's always a continuation of building at every club."
