David Moyes sides with Southampton in Newcastle transfer signing debate

David Moyes has agreed with Ralph Hasenhuttl and believes Newcastle should not be allowed to field any new signings for their rescheduled fixture with Southampton.

The Magpies were originally set to travel to St Mary’s on January 2 but an outbreak in Covid cases within the camp caused the game to be postponed.

Newcastle have since announced the arrival of England international Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid and more signings are expected as the club’s new owners look to make a statement in the transfer market.

Saints boss Hasenhuttl has questioned whether Newcastle should be allowed to play anybody who was not registered at the club before January 2.

Speaking ahead of Southampton’s FA Cup clash with Swansea, he said: "Newcastle could sign new players, we could also sign new players.

"We should discuss what happens with winter signings and if they are allowed to play.

"I'm not sure it is fair for them to play in games that have been postponed.”

Now, ahead of West Ham’s cup game against Leeds, Moyes has publicly sided with Hasenhuttl over Newcastle.

“I totally agree (Newcastle should not be allowed to play new signings in rearranged games) with that,” he told Football.London.

Toon supporters will be infuriated by any proposals to block their new signings from playing as the club look to climb the table in the second half of the campaign.
