David Moyes reveals what Man Utd can expect from a sporting director

David Moyes feels Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's control over transfers will not be inhibited at Manchester United should a sporting director be installed at the club.

United are in the process of change once again after conflicting methods from Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era led to an inconsistent approach in the transfer market.

The creation of the role of sporting director, or technical director, is mooted to be on the horizon at Old Trafford but Moyes believes Solskjaer, who was handed a three-year deal as the permanent United manager last week, will retain control over incomings and outgoings at the club.

“I don’t know many sporting directors who want to take the final decision on players, so it will still come down to the manager making the decision," the former United manager told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek programme.

“He will have a little bit more help on choosing and selection, but more importantly the decision I would say 100 per cent will be the manager’s choice."

Moyes' tenure at Real Sociedad following his dismissal from Old Trafford in 2014 saw him operate within a sporting director-led model, and the Scot said a manager is inclined to have the final say on decisions pertaining to transfer.

“What I found is in truth no sporting director wants to take that responsibility. You tend to find very few of them really want that final decision.

Former Manchester United player explains key to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer success

“It has to be the manager who has the final say if the player comes in. I think all managers would prefer it that way.

“I’ve worked with a sporting director, for example in Spain, and I still ultimately had the final say on the players who came in, it wasn’t the sporting director even though they had been at the club a long time, and from my information I think that’s the same at nearly every club.

“Ultimately what I would suggest is that the manager would always have the final say.”
