David Moyes outlines what he hopes Jesse Lingard will bring to West Ham from Man Utd

David Moyes believes Jesse Lingard will bring a winning mentality from Manchester United to West Ham.

The England midfielder, 28, was undergoing a medical as the West Ham boss held his press conference on Friday afternoon.

Lingard lifted the FA Cup, League Cup and the Europa League as a United player. Moyes believes his versatility will prove key with the club struggling in their search for a new striker.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against Liverpool he said: “I’ve seen him play as a young boy. He was still a wide player on the right. I’ve seen him play off the left and he’s played for England as a ten or an eight.

“I actually think we could play him as a false nine if we needed it as well. He will bring me that.

“I’ve wanted to try and get an energetic team at the moment and I think Jesse is known for his work rate and effort and I think he’ll fit in nicely with what we’ve got.

“I hope he brings us a little bit of quality and a winning mentality from Manchester United.”

West Ham have failed with a move for Roma’s former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, after seeing bids for Sevilla’s Sevilla marksman Youssef En-Nesyri, Montpelier striker Gartan Laborde and Reims striker Boulaye Dia rejected.

Moyes admitted the club will keep trying up to Monday’s deadline but insisted he is ready to wait until the summer to bring in quality up front.

“What I didn’t want to do was I didn’t want to bring in somebody who I didn’t think was going to have any impact,” he said.

“I didn’t want to add to a group of players someone who wasn’t going to be that useful to me, I want to get players who are.

“The owners have made offers for several players, one or two documented others behind the scenes have not which haven’t come up.

"[They are] people we’ll keep in mind for the summer. We’ve seen a really difficult transfer window because of Covid, Brexit - numbers changing and things changing.

"It has not been a tough window. You’re hearing more of clubs playing at the moment with false nines and that gives you an idea of the situation of trying to get quality No9s at this time.”
