David Moyes makes Billy Gilmour signing claim as he hails Chelsea star's 'love' for the game

West Ham boss David Moyes has given Chelsea wonderkid Billy Gilmour a rave review as he admitted if he could sign one Scottish player it would be the midfielder.

He is the latest in a line of pundits including Graeme Souness and Roy Keane to be wowed by the impact of the 18-year-old Scot since he emerged as a first team player.

The ball-playing creator announced he was to move south and depart Rangers aged just 15 - despite the desperate pleas of then Ibrox boss Pedro Caixinha.

And Moyes admits he's been blown away by the kid's development under the tutelage of Frank Lampard and Jody Morris at Stamford Bridge.

"The one I'd sign tomorrow would be Billy Gilmour from Chelsea," the veteran manager admitted to BBC Sportsound. "He's looked like a seasoned pro.

"He looks as if he is hungry and in love with the game.

"He is typical of what my memories are of what Scottish players were like going back many, many years and what they were like when we always had good players and really talented football players as well.

"And Billy Gilmour in the short period I have seen him has looked that all day long.

"And I hope so because we need to start getting a Scottish national team that gives us some hope but he's certainly a really talented young player."

Pundit Chick Young told Moyes he had skillfully avoided headlines linking him to Scottish based players like Callum McGregor.

A laughing Moyes joked: "I keep getting told how Chelsea want Declan Rice so I just decided I want Billy Gilmour and see how that goes down!"
