David Moyes hails Manchester United loan star Jesse Lingard's ability to "open games up"

David Moyes praised Jesse Lingard for injecting quality into West Ham's season at a key moment.

The 28-year-old struggled for opportunities at Manchester United and took the decision to go out on loan to the East London club in the January transfer window. He has shone in a side that is performing beyond expectations and currently sit in the top four of the Premier League.

While West Ham were not able to stop a relentless Manchester City at the Etihad as they went down to a 2-1 defeat, Lingard impressed again in front of the watching England manager Gareth Southgate to do his chances of a surprise call-up for the Euros no harm.

Moyes was happy with the performance put in by his players despite the result, and has been impressed by what the United loanee has added to West Ham as they continue their unlikely tilt at a Champions League stint.

"Jesse has brought us quality, which he's got. Over the years he has shown his level. He can play several roles - wide, as a 10, as a fordward, an out-and-out 9 if we needed, a midfield player," said Moyes.

"He takes the ball. He is someone who is helping us open games up. We needed something else [in the squad] and I think Jesse has given it and he has also helped the players around him by running with the ball and building play up. I've been really pleased."
