David Moyes explains Mark Noble's omission for West Ham against Chelsea

West Ham captain Mark Noble was ruled out for West Ham's Premier League clash against Chelsea with a slight hamstring injury and wasn't risked for the derby in east London.

The skipper picked up the knock in training ahead of the game and was replaced by Manuel Lanzini in the Hammers starting eleven which showed two changes from the defeat to Spurs last time out.

Wednesday's game is the first match that Noble hasn't started since Moyes returned to the club in January, starting 11 games straight though he was substituted off in two of the last three outings. Noble has played 28 times in the Premier League this season as the Hammers have battled against the drop.

In his place, Declan Rice was named as captain for the home side who are searching for their first win since the resumption of the top flight, having been beaten 2-0 by both Wolves and Spurs to get the restart underway.

Football.London understands that Noble's injury isn't too serious though he is an early doubt for the trip to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

David Moyes said prior to kick off: "At the end of training yesterday he felt his back tighten up a bit and he thinks it's his hamstring.

"With the games coming up we didn't think it was worth the risk. If it was a one off tonight possibly he could have made it but we just have too many games coming."

Angelo Ogbonna also made his return to the Hammers lineup after missing the last two games with his own hamstring injury. Sebastien Haller also missed out against Chelsea as he struggles to shake off a hip injury, Arthur Masuaku hasn't fully recovered from a twisted ankle and Robert Snodgrass was ruled out with a back injury.

Young midfielder Alfie Lewis was called up to a Premier League matchday squad for the first time as Lanzini was thrown into the starting eleven. He was on the bench alongside Albian Ajeti and Xande Silva, both strikers who were once again not preferred by Moyes to start up front with Michail Antonio once again leading the line.

At half time, West Ham level at 1-1 with the Blues after Willian's penalty four minutes before the break had given the visitors the lead. The Hammers had seen a goal for Tomas Soucek controversially ruled out after a four-minute VAR check but equalised on the stroke of half time through Soucek again, who headed home Jarrod Bowen's corner.
