Liverpool’s signing of Charlie Adam in 2011 will hardly go down as one of FSG’s most successful since taking over the club a decade ago.
Signed from relegated Blackpool in a £6.75m deal by Kenny Dalglish, the Scotland international had enjoyed an impressive campaign in the top-flight with the Seasiders, scoring 12 goals and registering eight assists as they fought in vain against the drop.
However, he never came close to replicating such form at Anfield, scoring twice and laying on 10 goals before missing the final two months of the season through injury.
Discarded by Brendan Rodgers shortly after his arrival on Merseyside, Adam only made 37 appearances during his year at Liverpool before being sold at a loss to Stoke City.
He did manage to leave Anfield with a winner’s medal, however, helping the Reds win the 2012 League Cup against Cardiff City despite skying his spot-kick in the penalty shootout.
But Adam did help Liverpool land a blow against local-rivals Everton thanks to a rather familiar face to then-Blues boss David Moyes.
Dundee United sporting director Tony Asghar worked as an agent on the deal in 2011 along with his business partner Kenny Moyes - brother of David.
Speaking on DUTV, he shared a little insight on the deal that took the midfielder to Merseyside and how the Moyes family connection did nothing to aid Everton’s efforts to sign Adam.
“Locally, one (of the transfer deals I was involved in) was Charlie Adam,” he said. “We took him to Blackpool and then to Liverpool. I remember Kenny (Moyes) closing the deal for them.
“I think at the time David wanted him at Everton as well.
“Kenny had to be clever as well because he (Charlie) went to their biggest rivals.”
He added: “The great thing being an agent – and it was for Kenny as well – was when the player got the deal.
“The financial thing for us was a bonus. When you’ve worked so hard with a player, the biggest buzz you get is when they sign the deal.”
