David Moyes admits he spoke to several other clubs before joining Sunderland

David Moyes has revealed he had talks with five other clubs before taking the Sunderland job in the summer of 2016.

The Scot lasted just one season at the Stadium of Light, presiding over the ill-fated Premier League campaign which saw the club relegated in the following May.

The former Manchester United boss resigned at the end of the campaign, with Sunderland then suffering a second consecutive relegation into League One the following year.

However, his move to Wearside almost never came about, with Moyes, who had years of success at Everton, revealing that he had spoken to several other clubs before joining the Black Cats.

In an interview with BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound he was asked about stories that he had talks with West Ham, Swansea and Aston Villa before Sunderland.

"Yes - and more," Moyes said. "Before I took the Sunderland job on I had also met Celtic and I had also met Everton, around that time as well.

"I don't know how close I have been to get it (Celtic), but I have had conversations with them over the years.

"It's something which has meant a lot to me. But if also had big opportunities to stay in England and other opportunities to take other big clubs."

Moyes is currently looking to get back into management after leaving West Ham in 2018.

"I have had lots of opportunities now to get back to work, but most have been in the English Championship," he added. "So if the right job comes along, I'll certainly look at it."
