Pete Carroll: David Moore ‘going to be out a bit’ with shoulder injury

The Seattle Seahawks’ competition at wide receiver got a lot thinner with the news David Moore suffered a shoulder injury during Thursday’s practice and will be out a while.

“David hurt his shoulder and he’s going to be out for a bit,” coach Pete Carroll said on Friday. “I’ll let you know more when I know more about it.”

A report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero indicated Moore is getting a second opinion on his shoulder and that the injury is not expected to require surgery.

Moore is in the thick of a very competitive position battle. Carroll made it clear that Moore won’t be ready for Week 1. While an injured reserve stint is a possibility, the team would need him to be on the 53-man roster if they wanted him to return at any point this season.

If the injury is severe enough, however, the Seahawks could place Moore on the season-ending IR before roster cuts, freeing up an additional roster spot.

The Seahawks are expected to go into the regular season with Tyler Lockett, Jaron Brown and DK Metcalf — assuming he’s healthy — as their top three receivers.

The final two spots are up for grabs, with Gary Jennings, John Ursua, Jazz Ferguson, Malik Turner, Keenan Reynolds, Amara Darboh and Terry Wright all competing alongside Moore for those spots.

If Moore does end up on the season-ending IR, expect Jennings, Ursua and Ferguson to battle it out for those final two spots on the active roster.
