David Montgomery ranked 27th among starting RBs entering 2019

Chicago Bears rookie running back David Montgomery hasn’t even won the starting job in 2019 yet, but he’s already garnering some respect from NFL Network’s Maurice Jones-Drew.

Jones-Drew recently ranked all 32 expected RB1s in the NFL entering 2019, and Montgomery made his list. Granted, he came in at No. 27, but the fact he’s being projected as the Bears’ starter is an indication of what MJD thinks of his talent and upside.

The rookie should fill the void left by Jordan Howard, who was traded to the Eagles this offseason, as a physical runner who forced 99 missed tackles last season at Iowa State (leading FBS RBs), according to Pro Football Focus … I can see Montgomery beating out Tarik Cohenfor the RB1 spot and serving as the team’s first- and second-down back.

Montgomery drew praise from the coaching staff and media in attendance at Chicago’s rookie and veteran minicamps, and is certainly trending in the right direction as training camp approaches.

He ended his college career with 624 carries for 2,925 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Montgomery is ranked ahead of established veterans like Tevin Coleman (49ers), Devonta Freeman (Falcons) and Lamar Miller (Texans).
