David Montgomery earns an A for preseason debut

David Montgomery was the toast of the Chicago Bears’ preseason opener last Thursday.

The third-round running back had been making waves throughout training camp, and it was more of the same when Montgomery finally saw live game action.

Montgomery had three carries for 16 yards, including an impressive 6-yard touchdown run that showcased his vision. He also had three receptions for 30 yards, displaying his versatility in the passing game.

Bucky Brooks gave Montgomery an “A” for his performance in his preseason debut against the Panthers.

Not only did Brooks give high praise for Montgomery, he also called him a possible “sleeper candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year.”

GRADE: A

I don’t know if the Bears are passing out game balls after preseason games, but No. 32 deserves one following his impressive showing against the Panthers. Montgomery tallied 46 scrimmage yards and a touchdown on six touches while exhibiting the silky smooth running style and dynamic pass-catching ability that made him a star at Iowa State. Not only did Montgomery look like an RB1, but he might be a sleeper candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

While it was only a preseason game, Montgomery’s performance against the Panthers showcased the intangibles that make him such a special player, including his vision, contact balance and elusiveness.

And that’s something that’s going to add a new dimension to the Bears’ offense in 2019.
