David Mellen is the new leader of Nottingham City Council

The new labour leader of Nottingham City Council will be Councillor David Mellen.

The long-standing member for Dales Ward and portfolio holder for early intervention and early years was elected by members of the Labour group on Friday evening (May 3).

His election follows the resignation of Councillor Jon Collins who held the post for 16 years.

The composition of the city's ruling Labour group has changed significantly following this election, with 15 serving councillors standing down, due to a combination of circumstances.

Cllr Mellen is considered a moderate within the Labour group and will face a challenge uniting the different wings of the party following the election of a number of Momentum and left-leaning councillors in Thursday's poll.

He said: "Jon has shown a great deal of passion in leading our city and I look forward to working with him on a handover during the next few weeks.

"I am humbled by the opportunity my colleagues in the Nottingham Labour Group have given me to serve our city."

Cllr Mellen was first elected to the Council in 1995 in the Dales ward and has served on the Council's Executive for 10 years.

Cllr Sally Longford was elected as Deputy Leader.

Jon Collins is leader until May 20, when the formal switchover will take place.

Labour held their reign at Nottingham City Council winning 50 seats out of 55.
