David McCallum in honest Rangers verdict as stand-in boss insists 'you couldn't write' Hibs goals

Stand-in Rangers boss David McCallum insists the four-man coaching staff and players have to share the blame after defeat to Hibs.

Martin Boyle ran riot in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final as he netted a hat-trick at Hampden.

Scott Arfield scored a consolation goal but Rangers failed to build on the lifeline.

Incoming boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in the stands at the national stadium while McCallum, Jermain Defoe, Brian Gilmour and Colin Stewart held the fort.

However, the Rangers B-team boss wasn't willing to pass the buck the domestic cup disappointments continued for the Scottish champions.

When asked if he thought the players let themselves down on Premier Sports, he said: "I think it's a we. We let ourselves down today.

"We are part of the staff and we were very much involved. I'm sure the players will be frustrated because they know we should be managing these games better.

"We are honest enough to deal with that. I keep going back to the goals that we lose. We cannot leave ourselves with a 3-0 deficit and expect it to be easy to come back into it.

"As a group we are frustrated, but as a group we need to get back moving forward again.

"There is a massive game coming up on Thursday, and there is the league coming up after that. There is a lot still to play for but we have to look forward and make sure we bounce back in the next game."

Rangers struggled to create in the second half, and McCallum explained his half-time team talk with the side trailing at the interval.

He added: "We've had to do our job at half-time. The players will have dealt with each other first of all, but after we got our heads clear that is where we took over.

"At that point we took over and said we need to not be leaving ourselves so open in the middle park of the pitch.

"From our point of view we were too open as a team, and the three goals we lost, you couldn't write it. They are three poor goals and the players know that, and accept that."
