David Martindale delivers Rangers penalty verdict as boss admits Livingston were 'lucky' with Alfredo Morelos call

Livingston boss David Martindale admits his side were "lucky" to avoid a penalty being awarded to Rangers during the 1-0 defeat.

Goal hero Alfredo Morelos looked to have been brought down by Lions keeper Max Stryjek as he knocked the ball past him, but referee John Beaton handed the Colombian a yellow instead of awarding a spot-kick.

It provoked a furious reaction from Steven Gerrard at half-time, with the Ibrox manager eventually been shown a red card by the whistler.

However, when speaking to BBC Sportsound Martindale agreed with rival gaffer Gerrard that his side were fortunate to avoid punishment from Beaton.

He said: "I think we got a wee bit lucky in the first half, I think it was a penalty looking at it back. We get a wee bit lucky in the first half with Rangers not getting the penalty to be honest.

"We have a few chances ourselves that we have got to do a bit better with to be honest.

"We lose a goal so late on, it always feels like a negative, but to lose it in the manner we did I'm just gutted for the players because I think the performance was there tonight.

"I thought the boys were brilliant and solid at the back. The game plan worked.

"We tried to force Rangers into a lot of straight balls, and it worked to a certain agree. Do they get a bit lucky? I'd need to watch it back, but Morelos is where Morelos should be to tap it in at the back post."
