David Marshall in Derby County blow as Scotland goalkeeper drops to third choice after big Wayne Rooney call

Scotland international David Marshall has become out of favour at Derby County, becoming gaffer Wayne Rooney's third choice goalkeeper.

The 36-year-old - who will forever be remembered for 'that' penalty save against Serbia which sent the Tartan Army to Euro 2020 - could be heading for the exit door after he wasn't included in the Rams' squad for Saturday's 1-1 draw with Huddersfield.

Kelle Roos started the match with new signing Ryan Allsop on the bench - and Rooney admitted the veteran shot stopper, who played in all three of Scotland 's Euro games, will be third choice this term.

He told Derbyshire Live : "Throughout the season you never know what happens.

"I think Ryan is a very good signing for us and will be great competition for Kelle. Obviously we have got David Marshall just behind them, pushing to try and play."

Rooney admits Marshall wasn't happy to receive the news, and he is now weighing up his options.

He said: "The situation is I'm looking to the future of this football club. Obviously Kelle Roos and Ryan Allsop are younger lads.

"David Marshall is a fantastic goalkeeper but ultimately you have to make a decision and my decision is to go with the two younger lads because I feel there is still potential there.

"I fully respect David Marshall as a person, as a goalkeeper but these are the tough decisions you have to make.

"I've explained my decision to Marshy and he's got a decision to make.

"That's down to him and whatever decision he makes I'll respect it. But also I'm not closing the door on him.

"There is still an opportunity for him to play as well. We have to wait and see what happens with that one.

"Of course he was disappointed. That's a manager's job. That's a situation which is not great and as a manager it's not something you want to have to deal with and do.

"But ultimately that's my job. So that's where we're at."
