David Mamet has written a play about disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning playwright, known for "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Wag the Dog," spilled the beans while promoting his newspaper-centric book "Chicago."
"I was talking with my Broadway producer and he said, 'Why don't you write a play about Harvey Weinstein?' And so I did." Mamet told the Chicago Tribune in an interview published Thursday.
The play currently goes by the title "Bitter Wheat" and doesn't have an opening date yet. However, Mamet said there's already a Chicago stage veteran turned movie star _ he's not sharing the name _ who's interested in the lead role.
No producer has been named either, but Variety speculated that it could be Jeffrey Richards, who collaborated with Mamet on productions of "Glengarry Glen Ross," "Speed-the-Plow" and "November," among numerous others.
Sexual exploitation was a theme Mamet explored in his 1992 play turned film "Oleanna," and it's something the dark poet has been thinking about a lot lately, he told the paper.
"Every society has to confront the ungovernable genie of sexuality and tries various ways to deal with it and none of them work very well," he said. "There is great difficulty when you are switching modes, which we seem to be doing now. People go crazy. They start tearing each other to bits."
