David Lynch is walking back his declaration that President Trump "could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history" to say the president is so far doing more harm than good.
The "Twin Peaks" creator penned a Facebook post Tuesday addressed to Trump after the commander-in-chief retweeted a Breitbart article with a headline broadcasting Lynch's much-written-about comment to The Guardian.
"I wish you and I could sit down and have a talk. This quote which has traveled around was taken a bit out of context and would need some explaining," Lynch wrote.
Though Lynch initially had praised Trump for "disrupt(ing) the thing so much" and for preventing his opponents from being able to counter him "in an intelligent way," the filmmaker, 72, said in his Facebook post that Trump won't get the opportunity to have a positive historical impact if things keep going the way they're going.
"Unfortunately, if you continue as you have been, you will not have a chance to go down in history as a great president," he wrote. "This would be very sad it seems for you _ and for the country. You are causing suffering and division."
Lynch did offer a silver lining, however, and said Trump still has time to make things right.
"It's not too late to turn the ship around. Point our ship toward a bright future for all. You can unite the country. Your soul will sing," he wrote. "Under great leadership, no one loses _ everybody wins. It's something I hope you think about and take to heart. All you need to do is treat all the people as you would like to be treated."
Lynch's interview with The Guardian did touch on some of the Trump administration's shortcomings as well; he told the outlet that "our so-called leaders can't take the country forward, can't get anything done. Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this."
But the president seemed to hear the praise loud and clear, telling the crowd at a South Carolina rally Monday, "This is a Hollywood guy... And plenty of them voted for me. Of course, there goes his career, you know, in Hollywood."
