David Luiz's outburst 'at Arsenal team-mates' as he watched Villarreal misery from stands

David Luiz felt helpless from the stands as he watched Arsenal crash out of the Europa League to Villarreal.

The centre-half picked up an injury at the weekend against Newcastle and was ruled out of the crucial semi-final second leg against the La Liga side.

The Gunners only needed the one goal to book a spot in the final as they took an away goal back from Spain but Mikel Arteta's men were unable to break down a stubborn Unai Emery side.

Arsenal could have done with Luiz 's experience and leadership, but that didn't stop him from trying to influence the game even though he wasn't playing.

As the players walked off at halftime, Luiz apparently could be seen 'shouting and swearing' from the stands trying to instil some urgency in his teammates as they searched for a breakthrough, according to ESPN journalist James Olley.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, the Brazilian's pep talk didn't have the desired effect as it ended 0-0 at the Emirates with Villarreal progressing to the final to face Manchester United.

Luiz's contract at the Gunners runs out in the summer and it remains to be seen if he will extend his stay in London.

Mikel Arteta hinted at his pre-match press conference that there would be a host of players leaving in the summer.

He said: "It's true for some players it might be their last season for different reasons.

"I can see how much it means to them and how much they want it."

The 34-year-old's appearance in Arsenal's win over the Magpies was his first since March and he has, for the most part, been a bit-part player for the Gunners this term.

Luiz's return was short-lived, however, as he limped off with a hamstring injury and his season and Arsenal career could easily be over with only four games left of the Premier League season.
