David Luiz reveals he would have fouled Mohamed Salah to prevent third Liverpool goal

David Luiz was given a torrid time by Mohamed Salah on Saturday.

He is not the first defender to suffer at the hands of the Egyptian and he will not be the last either.

Luiz was a deadline day signing for Arsenal, snaring the defender from London rivals Chelsea, in a deal that almost came out of nowhere, surprising everyone.

Arsenal were in desperate need of defensive reinforcements and the Brazilian, while capable of making a mistake or two, has a wealth of Premier League experience and a winning mentality too.

He was a risk the Gunners were prepared to take, but after enjoying a winning debut during victory over Burnley last weekend, Luiz was at fault for two of the Liverpool goals at Anfield.

The centre-back grabbed a handful of Salah's shirt soon after the half-time interval to hand the Egyptian a penalty, which he converted in style, before being turned by the frontman, allowing him to stride through on goal and slot past Bernd Leno for the third.

Luiz was asked about the penalty after the game, and despite it being blatant, he felt it was harsh because he didn't "pull the shirt with power".

He said: "Mo said to me he didn’t feel me touch him so that’s why he didn’t fall down to the floor but now with VAR, you cannot see the power so it’s difficult for the referees and he sees the shirt.

"It could be a penalty every time. It is interpretation, so I think if you pull someone with power and you change his attempt to go to the ball it’s different.

"If I put my hand like that, the power is different. So that’s what I say. VAR is difficult for them, they cannot see the power, so if I pull him like this [yanks Geoff Shreeves] it’s more power, so it depends on the interpretation but if you see the shirt, it’s why they give a penalty.

"I don’t judge or complain, I just say my view and it’s just one second. Football is like that. We have to look forward. I spoke to Mo, he is my friend, and he said he didn’t feel that so, but that’s football."

And Luiz went on to say that he would have fouled Salah in the build-up to the third, if he hadn't been booked for the penalty.

He added: "After that [penalty] he gave me a yellow so for the third goal I could not make a foul to put my team in trouble with ten men. So I think the condition affected my game after that but like I said, the team fought until the end."
