David Luiz's Chelsea talks continue as defender rejects £220,000-a-week Qatar contract

David Luiz has rejected a contract worth £220,000 a week from a club in Qatar as he continues to hold talks with Chelsea over a new deal.

Luiz’s current agreement at Chelsea is worth less than £130,000 a week. It expires in the summer, which means he is able to talk to teams abroad about joining as a free agent at the end of the season.

He has been approached by a side in Qatar, the identity of which is not known, about a three-year contract worth £34m.

The 32-year-old defender has also received a multi-year offer worth over £8.5m from Brazilian side Palmeiras.

But it is believed that Luiz has rejected both because he wants to continue playing for a top club in Europe.

As per their policy regarding players over 30, Chelsea want to only give him a 12 month extension, but the centre half wants one for two years.

Luiz claimed last month that he intends to stay at Stamford Bridge and that a resolution was close to being reached.

When asked if he will still be at Chelsea next season, Luiz said: “I think so. We are talking with the club. Everybody knows I love this club, I feel comfortable here and am happy here. I am doing my job very well so I think a lot is going to happen.”
