David Luiz has said Arsenal’s defence needs to improve “immediately” as they look to kick-start their season.
The Gunners take on Brighton this evening as Freddie Ljungberg takes charge of his first home game as interim head coach, following the sacking of Unai Emery.
Arsenal are without a win from their last eight games in all competitions – a run which has seen them lose ground on the top four in the Premier League.
A factor which has been regularly attributed to the Gunners’ poor form has been their defence, but Luiz believes the whole side need to contribute in order to turn things around.
Speaking to Amazon Prime, Luiz said: “Now in modern football, everybody has to understand both moments of the game, when you attack and defend.
"First attacker I always say is the goalkeeper, and the first defender is the striker, so we have to understand that we need to improve this immediately because, for a long time, we haven’t had a team where you can see nobody can score against us."
On Arsenal’s current form, Luiz added: "We have to be consistent, and at the moment we are not.
"That’s why this change has been made, and now we’re going to take in new oxygen and try to win some games."
Luiz starts alongside the returning Sokratis Papastathopoulos at the heart of the Gunners' defence this evening as they look to end their winless run against Brighton.
Ljungberg makes three changes in total, with Hector Bellerin and Lucas Torreira also restored to the line-up.
Nicolas Pepe is once again among the substitutes as he's been forced to wait for his first taste of action under the interim head coach.
