'David Luiz part two' - These Arsenal fans can't believe Man United transfer links

Arsenal had one of the worst defensive records in the top half of the Premier League table last season.

And things have not got much better this time around.

Unai Emery was sacked after a terrible start to the campaign, with Freddie Ljungberg standing in as interim head coach in the last two matches.

But the former Gunners midfielder has been unable to oversee an upturn in form, with a draw and a defeat against Norwich and Brighton respectively in the two games since he has taken charge.

Ljungberg has failed to improve the defence, with Arsenal shipping two goals in each of their last five matches and reinforcements could be coming in the January transfer window.

Arsenal already have a new defender incoming next summer, with William Saliba joining from St Etienne in the summer, but going back to the French side on loan for this season.

But could there be any more players coming in between now and then?

There have been plenty of players linked with a move to the Emirates, with Dayot Upamecano chief among them.

But a player closer to home could be more likely.

Reports in the Mirror on Saturday suggested that Arsenal were leading a clutch of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.

Smalling is on loan with Italian side Roma for the season and has put in some good performances for the Serie A outfit. Arsenal scouts were reportedly watching the 29-year-old during the goalless draw with Inter Milan on Friday night and are keeping an eye on his situation at Old Trafford to see how it develops.

The transfer reports have brought a lot of reaction from Arsenal fans on Twitter.

The Gunners have been unable to find the right formula at the back this season and Smalling would some much-needed cover.

However, as some Gunners supporters have pointed out, if he is deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, why would Arsenal make  move for him?

His age could also be a factor in any decision.
