David Luiz makes vow to Arsenal supporters about defensive record ahead of Sheffield United trip

Arsenal are getting stronger defensively.

That's the view of summer signing from Chelsea David Luiz, who kept his first Premier League clean sheet of the season in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth before the international break.

The Gunners' struggles defensively stretch all the way back to last season.

Their total of 51 goals conceded was more than the likes of Wolves, Everton, Leicester City and Newcastle United - teams that finished below them in the final standings.

In a bid to improve the defensive record, head coach Unai Emery swooped for Luiz and also has Sokratis, Calum Chambers, Rob Holding, Shkodran Mustafi and Konstantinos Mavropanos to call upon.

However, the Gunners haven't looked all that secure at the back this season, although the Brazilian has insisted that improvements are being made.

"We talk about this with every single club, Arsenal is no different," Luiz told NBC Sports. "I think Unai is working very well with the plan to defend and then the plan to attack.

"I always say, defending starts with the strikers and through the whole team, and you can see with modern football that the goalkeeper is now like a No 6.

"We are going to try and improve, we are already doing well and the last few games have showed that we are stronger in a defensive way. I want this club to improve in every part of the game.

"I think we've started really well and we just lost one game in the Premier League.

"I think the team is improving and now we are in third in the table but we want to finish this season fighting for the title."

Arsenal, who have conceded 11 goals in the Premier League this season, put their improved defence to the test against Sheffield United on Monday night.
