David Luiz gives verdict on Pablo Mari's Arsenal debut after FA Cup win

David Luiz heaped praise on Pablo Mari after the new arrival made his debut for Arsenal on Monday.

The Spanish defender was yet to feature for the Gunners since completing his initial loan move from Flamengo in January, but started the FA Cup fifth round tie against Portsmouth.

Mari slotted in alongside Luiz in Arsenal's defence, and played the full 90 minutes as they ran out 2-0 winners over their League Two opponents, impressing with his display.

"I'm so happy for Pablo, he's a great guy, a great player and he had an amazing game so we are here to help each other and we are here, 25 players, ready to play, ready to play for Arsenal and ready to give the best job," Luiz told Arsenal's official website .

"When it's like that it's a pleasure to play football as I will say to the guys, especially to these young lads who are starting football.

"They are starting with a great opportunity at a big club and they are doing great, so it's a pleasure to play with them."

Mari joined Arsenal on an initial loan move until the end of the season, but his switch will become permanent this summer.

His last senior performance was at the end of last year, and he has played just a matter of minutes for Arsenal's under-23 side since, prior to his debut at Fratton Park.

The 26-year-old also pleased his boss Mikel Arteta, who was encouraged by Mari's contribution.

"He was very good, he was very solid, very vocal," Arteta said. "And we didn’t see the lack of rhythm that he has because he hasn’t played in two-and-a-half months I think but in general, overall, really happy."

Sokratis put Arsenal ahead in first-half injury time, volleying home Reiss Nelson's cross, before youngster Eddie Nketiah added a second from close range shortly after the break.

Arsenal now enter the hat for the quarter-finals, but will turn their attentions to Saturday's Premier League clash with West Ham .
