David Livingstone Birthplace museum unveils exciting summer activities programme

With the summer holidays officially underway, people are being encouraged to visit the all new David Livingstone Birthplace museum in Blantyre for a fun family day out.

For the 2022 Summer Programme, which includes a number of workshops and activities, has been inspired by David Livingstone’s love of nature and storytelling.

It includes activities to help teach children and adults how important it is to look after the environment, as well as events such as weekly interactive story sessions with song and movement for children aged two to six, held at the museum and based on Southern African and Scottish stories.

What's more, every Tuesday there will be a crafts session where children can get creative making animal masks, comic strips, story books, puppets, etc. With no set theme it gives the kids the option to have fun and use their imagination to create exciting pieces.

Den building is another fun activity on offer next Wednesday, July 13, when people are invited to come and join the conservation volunteers and find materials across the museum’s grounds to make your very own den and learn all about the different animal habitats, from hedgehogs to badgers.

Then, on July 20, the Hedgehog Habitats special workshop will be run by the conservation volunteers as they teach children and adults all about hedgehogs. The event will include recording hedgehog numbers, building habitats, hunting for bugs and learning more about how we can encourage more of these prickly characters to live in the museum’s gardens and parks.

And on Friday, July 22, the David Livingstone Birthplace will host a Youth Open Day which will include food and refreshments with a DJ present to play music throughout the event. Activities will be on offer such as table tennis and a print-making workshop.

This will include items of furniture, shields, and musical instruments. Attendees will have the opportunity to create sculptures out of recycled material.
