David Livingstone Birthplace museum launches exciting summer events programme

The David Livingstone Birthplace museum is looking forward to a season full of fun with the launch of its summer events programme.

A number of events are set to take place at the museum in Blantyre throughout the holidays.

The programme has been inspired by the Lanarkshire explorer's love of nature and story telling.

And staff are excited to put these two together, running activities which teach visitors young and old how important it is to look after the natural environment, now more than ever.

It all kicks off next Saturday, June 25, with an afternoon of live music, featuring artist Gameli Tordzro, a specially commissioned film by Mara Menzie and the launch of a new zine exploring untold stories in response to the museum's collections.

There will also be crafts sessions launching on the same day where the museum's learning team invite kids along to discover their creative side. They will then run every Tuesday of the school holidays thereafter.

On Mondays, Storytime At The Museum takes place where interactive sessions are held, based on Southern African and Scottish stories. This event is aimed at younger children between two and six years old.

The museum's Conservation Volunteers will hold a special event on July 6 called BioBlitz which explores natural surroundings and investigates the wildlife in the museum grounds. Youngsters can come along to catch bugs and butterflies, record plant life and spot birds and small creatures.

There will also be a clay pottery workshop held on July 15 which is free to attend. It is open to 16-25 year olds only.

Kids can also get involved in den building on July 13 where they will also learn about different animals' natural habitats.

A Youth Open Day will be held on July 22 between 12pm-4pm. People are invited along for food, refreshments, a DJ, music, table tennis and a print-making workshop, inspired by patterns found in the museum's collection.

Bushcraft sessions will take place on August 1 and August 15 where locals can learn all about what it takes to survive in the great outdoors.

And a Junk Art session will also be available on July 29 where you can turn rubbish into art, recycling materials into fun items.

There will be so much more to do for people of all ages throughout this summer holidays. You can see the full events listing here.

Even as a child, Livingstone explored. He explored the grounds of what was Blantyre Cotton Works, now the grounds of our museum.

He collected plants and researched what they could be used for, he hunted for fossils and even fished in the River Clyde.

The Birthplace museum now looks after acres of park land and is determined to encourage a healthy eco system, full of trees, plants, animals, birds, and insects.

They are working with several partners to deliver all the fun sessions being held this summer, including Visit Scotland.
