David Lammy tells Jeremy Corbyn to ensure Commons vote does not clash with Champions League final

David Lammy has asked Jeremy Corbyn to ensure Theresa May does not call a Commons vote on the day of the Champions League final so he can attend the contest in Madrid.

The Tottenham MP told the Labour leader to “in north London solidarity” make sure the day is kept free after Spurs reached their first ever final with a 3-2 win over Ajax on Wednesday night.

Mr Corbyn had congratulated Tottenham and Liverpool, who thumped Barcelona 4-0 on Tuesday, for “defying the odds” and securing their places in final stage of the competition despite both trailing after their semi-final first legs.

"Even an Arsenal fan can appreciate the astonishing performances by @LFC and @SpursOfficial over the last two nights,” Mr Corbyn wrote on Twitter following Spur’s clash.

Labour MP Mr Lammy responded to the party leader’s message by saying: “Boss in north London solidarity can you make sure Theresa May doesn't call another vote on the day of the final. I'm going to Madrid. Cheers.”

It comes after Prime Minister Mrs May was mocked for suggesting she could make a Liverpool-style comeback to secure a Brexit deal.

Mr Lammy had been following Spurs' fortunes during the game, where the north London side came from three goals behind. "Hiding behind the sofa now," Lammy had tweeted during the remarkable comeback.

The Champions League final used to take place mid-week but moved to a Saturday night from the 2009-10 season, so it is very unlikely there will be a clash between any Commons vote and the match.

This season's final will take place on June 1 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid.
