- David Lammy has refused to say whether Sir Keir Starmer will definitely remain prime minister after the local elections.
- The deputy prime minister remained non-commital over Sir Keir’s future while awaiting the results from the local elections which took place across the UK.
- Asked if Starmer will stay no matter what happens over the next few days, Lammy said: “People want to see the Labour Party deliver, and for councillors working hard, for activists, members on the doorstep making sure that our message is delivered locally, they want to see us nationally delivering on their behalf as well.”
- He added that the elections have “been tough” and there were “frustrations” and admitted that Labour will have to “pick up pace” and “deliver for the public”.
- It come as polling expert Lord Robert Hayward predicted Labour could lose approximately 1,850 councillors in England and the national vote in Wales for the first time in over a century.
