Junior Thompson returns for first time in a year against opponent yet to be confirmed

Liverpool boxer Junior Thompson returns to action on May 6th at the Bolton Stadium Hotel.

His opponent has not yet been announced, but it will be Thompson’s first fight since a points victory over Vasif Mamedov last May.

The undefeated boxer told the ECHO: “I’m really excited to get back in the ring and shake off the rust.

“I’ve been sparring all year round but just didn’t get the enjoyment out of it. The enjoyment is being able to get into the actual ring.

“I always see the fight as the cherry on the cake for all the hard work.”

Thompson’s record stands at 5-0-0 (2 KO) and this will be his first fight under 2010 Commonwealth Gold medallist Tom Stalker after signing a new promotional agreement with him and General Sports Worldwide (GSW)'

Thompson added: “I owe massive gratitude to Tom. He’s single-handedly revived my career.

“Boxing is a momentum sport and starting with Tom, the things he’s got lined up for me are really exciting.

“He’s took all the pressure off me, and he’s let me just be able to train and perform in the ring. I can’t wait to pay him back by putting on some shows.”

Stalker called Thompson “one of the best light middleweights in the country” and the 2010 Commonwealth gold medallist has promised more fights from the 32-year-old.

“He’s gonna be fighting May 6th and June 9th and in the middle of July.

“By the end of the year he’ll be fighting on either a Matchroom show or a Sky Sports show against a top prospect”.

“He’s got everything. He’s a boxer but he’s got a bit of power as well. He’s got everything to go a long way in the sport of boxing.”

Dee Taggart, Thompson’s trainer, has welcomed the addition of Stalker and says his involvement is a big help to all the fighters.

“Tom has been a complete lifeline and tonic to Junior and myself.

“It’s impossible not to like his enthusiasm and positive energy. He’s been there himself and you can tell how much he not only loves the game but is there to do all he can for the fighters”.

Tickets for the fight are limited and can be purchased from Junior Thompson directly on his Instagram page @majesticjunior_ or by calling him on 07453993131.

Doors open at the Bolton Stadium Hotel on Saturday May 6th at 18:00, with the first bell at 18:30.
