David Johnson won’t simply rest Sunday because of Thursday game next week

It is unknown thus far whether running back David Johnson will be able to play Sunday when the team takes on the New Orleans Saints. He has missed the first two practices of the week so far.

After playing only three snaps in Week 7 and with a short turnaround after Week 8, as the Cardinals will play the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday next week, some believe it might be the smartest play to simply have Johnson sit out against the Saints and be all set for the 49ers.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said that is not how things will go.

“He’s a tough-nosed competitor,” Kingsbury told reporters Wednesday. “We’re going to be smart with him, but if he can go, he’ll go.”

Johnson would not be happy sitting out if he is capable of playing.

The offense is better when Johnson can play. Luckily, with Chase Edmonds showing he is more than capable of handling a heavy load in the running game, maybe Johnson playing in a limited role would be fine.

It is unknown yet how the Cardinals will handle Johnson but it shouldn’t be a surprise if he is on the field in New Orleans.
