David Jason admits Only Fools and Horses had 'worst figures' in British TV history

Sir David Jason revealed Only Fools and Horses once brought in some of the TV's worst viewing figures.

The actor played the character of Del Boy, a loveable fraudster determined to make one of his get-rich-quick schemes work. Only Fools and Horses followed Del, along with his family, tieing themselves up in ridiculous situations all in the name of earning a few bucks.

The sitcom first aired in the 80s but went on to be one of the most notable and instantly recognisable shows the BBC has ever commissioned. Still riding the waves of popularity over 40 years on, David joined Lorraine to look back at how monumental the series was.

Discussing the Christmas specials, Lorraine said: "You sat there and you watched [Only Fools and Horses] on Christmas Day with the whole family. A lot of people did watch the Queen's speech and then Only Fools and Horses, that was what you did. It would not have been Christmas without it."

The special broke records as it managed to reel in more than 24 million viewers. David humbly admitted the show wasn't always so well received and actually brought in some of the BBC's worst viewing figures ever.

He said: "It did take quite a time to get to that position. We started with probably some of the worst figures in British television history. Again, I don't think you get shows today that would be nursed."

"But you wouldn't be able to reach those sorts of figures now no matter how good you are because we have got so many more channels. When I talked to the writer of Only Fools we both agreed we had reached a point where we could stretch a character so it meant as an actor I had a lot more depth to give.

He added: "There were those dramatic moments and things like when Rodney got married. To get to reach those depths as an actor was part of the fun."
