David Jamieson Hydro defence scuppered by dog bite as he eyes rescheduled bout

Westwood boxer David Jamieson could have been on top of the world, having defended his IBO Intercontinental title against Dec Spelman at the Hydro on Friday.

Instead, he’s on a second course of antibiotics to counter an infected hand, caused by a dog bite.

Jamieson is devastated that the fight couldn’t take place on the undercard of Hannah Rankin’s title defence, but is convinced he did the right thing.

Comparing the situation to a game of ‘Snakes and Ladders’, Jamieson says nobody would have cared about the injury, had England’s Spelman left Glasgow with the belt.

Jamieson, 30, said: “It’s infected. The sore one is that the fight is off, but the hand will heal and the fight will be rescheduled.

Jamieson was "flying, really ready" in the build-up to the fight, which was to be at the Hydro on Friday (Dean Cohen)

“There’s not going to be any permanent damage – the ligaments and tendons are fine.

“It’s disappointing; I invested a lot of time and effort, and a bit of money as well – I dropped my hours down in work – and was away down to London at training camps, sparring. We were flying, really ready to go.

“Obviously it’s the Hydro, so it’s a mega venue, but at this stage the analogy I’d use is Snakes and Ladders; I’m that far up the ladder here, and if I hit a snake, you’re right down to the bottom of the pile, again.

“Realistically, if I jumped in the ring with Dec Spelman and I got beat, nobody would have cared if I got bit by a dog.

“We let everybody know, went through the right channels and told them it can’t happen.”

Jamieson says the fight will be rescheduled, and is pushing for it to be a headline event at Hamilton Town House once he has recovered.

He said: “The boys at FightZone have assured me that it will happen – there’s too much interest in this fight.

“Realistically, this fight could have headlined the Hydro, everybody’s really excited about this one. It will be rescheduled. Dec wants the fight, so do I, and we’ll get it on.

Jamieson is now looking to defend his IBO Intercontinental belt in Hamilton (DAILY RECORD)

“Do I headline my own show, do they put me in the Paisley Lagoon Centre? One that I’m trying to put forward to them, and have been for a while, is Hamilton Town House.

“It is stunning. The York Hall is such a prestigious boxing venue, and it’s pretty much a carbon copy of that. It holds about 550 people and if they put me on top of the bill in South Lanarkshire we can sell the place out.”
