David Hussey and Stephen Fleming in the frame for Trent Bridge return as The Hundred head coach

David Hussey could be set for a return to Trent Bridge as head coach of the new team based there in The Hundred.

The former Nottinghamshire and Australia batsman has just been named as the new head coach of the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.

Hussey is understood to be on a shortlist of up to seven people for the role, along with another former Notts player in Stephen Fleming, the man Hussey succeeded at the Stars.

Both men have built a strong reputation in the game and the people currently behind the East Midlands based team are keen for the head coach to have connections to the area when the tournament starts next summer.

Over a nine year period, Hussey, 41, scored 6,312 first-class runs for Notts at an average of 61.28, as well as 1,990 list A runs at 37.54 and 1,992 in T20 cricket at 35.59, making him a hugely popular figure at the club.

Former New Zealand captain Fleming, 46, is another respected figure at Trent Bridge, having played for the club between 2005 and 2007.

Interviews have not taken place with the candidates with that likely to happen once each of the eight host venues signs formal contracts with the England and Wales Cricket board.

Potential playing targets are yet to be decided, but analysis will be stepped up during the upcoming T20 Blast for homegrown players.

Meanwhile, it has been reported the ECB have applied for trademarks for six of the eight teams.

The Evening Standard say the Nottingham-based team will be called the Trent Rockets.

The other names are said to be Lord's based London Spirit, Welsh Fire (Cardiff), Southern Brave (Southampton), Birmingham Phoenix and Leeds Superchargers.

The teams based at Old Trafford and the Oval are yet to have their names decided.

The Nottingham-based team is currently being run the chief executives of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire.
