David Hopkin targeted for Ayr United job as former Livingston boss lined up to replace Mark Kerr

Ayr United want to name David Hopkin as their new manager.

The Championship club have interviewed a number of candidates but are now edging towards the former Livingston and Bradford City boss.

The 50-year-old has been out of a job since he stepped down from the Morton job earlier this season.

Hopkin is tried and trusted in the Championship and helped Livi win promotion to the Premiership.

Applicants for the Ayr job were informed that they had been unsuccessful over the last 24 hours.

The likes of former Scotland coach James McFadden and East Fife boss Darren Young were linked with the post, while former Rangers and Aberdeen defender David Robertson was also interested.

Ayr have been on the lookout for a boss since they parted ways with Mark Kerr at the end of last month.

Kerr was relieved of his dutied after successive defeats to Hearts, Inverness and Arbroath, with coaches David White and Derek Stillie taking charge of Saturday's 2-0 win over Hopkin's former side Morton.
