David Healy urges Rangers to give Celtic a guard of honour at Ibrox

Rangers chiefs have been urged to give Celtic a guard of honour at Ibrox this weekend.

That was the call from former Gers striker David Healy after it was reported that the Light Blues will NOT line up for the Scottish Premiership champions before Sunday's game.

Linfield boss Healy believes it would be in "the right spirit" for Rangers to recognise the Hoops' achievements with a guard of honour.

He told the Scottish Sun: “I read Kris Boyd’s comments saying Rangers would be a classier club if they did give the guard of honour.

“In this day and age I firmly believe that it would be in the right spirit to do it.”

Cliftonville gave Healy's Linfield a guard of honour when the two sides met recently in the Danske Bank Premiership.

It came after the Blues had clinched their second title in three years under the guidance of the former Northern Ireland striker.

“Cliftonville’s guard of honour at Windsor Park was appreciated not only by me, but by all the people at Linfield," Healy added.

“It would have been an easy one for them to say, ‘Not for us’. We’re big rivals and are from different parts of the city. I was more than grateful and appreciative of what Cliftonville did for us.”

Rangers not planning to give Celtic guard of honour at Ibrox on Sunday

Healy added: “Rangers are a fantastic club and it was a dream for me to play there.

“It’s not for me to say what’s right or wrong, or to be critical of a club I have so much respect for.

“Only the people in charge there can make the decision.

“However, my personal opinion is Celtic have more than earned the right for any team to give them a guard of honour.

"They have won the title with two games left and are deserved champions.

“Looking at it from the outside, I think it would go down very well, especially following all of the negative issues in Scottish football this season.

“It would be a huge thing for Rangers to give Celtic a guard of honour on Sunday. Not just because of the Rangers-Celtic element of things, but for Scottish football as a whole.

“I think it would help bring back a positive image of the game.

“Then, if Rangers were to win the league next year or whenever, it could be reciprocated by Celtic.”
