David Hasselhoff makes 'save lives' video appeal to Welsh community

Baywatch superstar David Hasselhoff has given a community appeal to raise money for a defibrillator in a Cardiff suburb a massive boost.

The residents of Pontprennau are hoping to raise £1,295 to have the life-saving equipment placed at various outside locations in the area.

Organisers have set up a justgiving page, and couldn't believe it when the Hollywood actor gave them a helping hand by making a video appeal.

In it, The Hoff, who recently turned up at a pub on the Welsh border for a two-year-old's birthday party, said: "This is David Hasselhoff. One Hoff can make a difference. Pontprennau you need a convenient defibrillator, you need a a convenient defibrillator, to save lives.

"So, get the defibrillator, get it in a convenient place where everybody knows. Let them know where it is and you can save someone's life. You can save someone's life, how cool is that?"

With a small salute, he ends by saying. "Off, Hoff."

Organisers of the appeal are delighted with the support.

They said: "Universal superstsar David Hasselhoff knows a thing or two about saving lives. Be it when he was a lifeguard in LA or when he caught bad guys with a talking car or that time he single-handedly saved East Germany from communism - he knows how important it is to step up, and do your bit.

"He is asking you today to be a lifesaver. It's a great cause that could save a life."

They added that in honour of his support, they would call the first defibrillator 'Hoff'.

The need for defibrillators in local communities has gained momentum since footballer Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening game at Euro 2020.

The device - which gives a high-energy electric shock to the heart - was used as part of the emergency action that saved the footballer's life. Fast use of a defibrillator can increase survival rates by up to 70%.

The group of fundraisers in Pontprennau have teamed up with Welsh charity CalonHeart which means training will also be offered to anyone interested in learning CPR and how to use the machines.
