David Harbour's modern Bohemian living room is an inspired reimagining of this '70s design trend –'sometimes you just need to stop worrying about what goes with what'

David Harbour attends the 'Downtown Owl' Tribeca Festival Premiere After Party hosted by Casamigos at The Chelsea Hotel on June 08, 2023 in New York City.

The Bohemian home – once a mainstay of 1970s decor – is a space where creativity, individuality, and a wild mix of color and pattern meet in a contemporary environment. This nostalgic aesthetic is having a very modern renaissance, and we are here for the revival.

American actor David Harbour's New York City living room is the epitome of modern Bohemian style. The space had remained untouched since the 1970s, but rather than resign this iconic design era to the history bin, the plant was to modernize and restore the Bohemian living room to its former glory.

Instead, to transform this industrial relic into a warm, livable home, Harbour enlisted designer Kyle O’Donnell of Gramercy Design. Together, they embarked on a comprehensive renovation that honored the building's history while introducing modern comforts.

The result is a harmonious blend of old and new – a serene sanctuary that reflects Harbour's personal style and offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Modern bohemian style is a fresh, curated take on the free-spirited bohemian aesthetic, blending eclectic charm with clean, contemporary design.

It’s all about layering textures, earthy tones, and natural materials (think rattan, jute, linen, and wood) with modern silhouettes, minimal clutter, and neutral backdrops.

You’ll often see soft, organic shapes, global-inspired patterns, and greenery paired with unfussy furniture, metallic accents, and open, airy spaces.

Modern boho feels relaxed yet refined – cozy and personal, but still elevated and intentional. It’s perfect for anyone who loves laid-back vibes with a touch of sophistication and soul.

When recreating this look yourself, throw the rulebook out of the window. Sometimes you just need to stop worrying about what goes with what and just go with the flow. This style is perfect for the carefree at heart, and you can pick up decor and furniture pieces over a longer period of time. It's about curation rather than clutter.

Shop the Boho look

When shopping for a modern bohemian space, anything goes. This is several styles within a style, so simply mix and match colors, warm up with plenty of wood and add a touch of glamor with the occasional metallic accent.
