David Hagen dead at 47 as Rangers and Hearts hero loses brave battle against motor neurone disease

Ex- Rangers and Hearts hero David Hagen has passed away aged 47.

The former midfielder has died following a brave battle against motor neurone disease.

Hagen was diagnosed with the devastating illness in 2018 at just 45 years old.

He also turned out for Falkirk, Clyde, Livingston, Peterhead and finally Bo'ness United during a successful career in the Scottish game.

But it was at Ibrox Hagen made his breakthrough, emerging into the side in 1992 with the club in the midst of its run to nine successive league titles.

Rangers reacted to the tragic news with a poignant message on Friday night.

It read: "Rangers Football Club is saddened by the news of the death of former player, David Hagen.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the wider family circle at such a difficult time. Words cannot express, nor provide comfort, for a family during these circumstances.

"David will be remembered for his part in the famous Nine in a Row side and featured in the amazing 1992-93 season when Rangers won the treble and came within one game of the Champions League final."

From Ibrox, the Edinburgh-born star moved back to the capital with Hearts for a season.

An ex-Scotland U-21 cap, Hagen then enjoyed a memorable spell at Falkirk, making over 100 appearances for the Bairns.

An appeal was set up in 2018 following his MND diagnosis and several benefit events took place to aid the stricken star and his family.

His passing follows that of Fernando Ricksen, who also died after a long fight with the disease in September 2019.

Hagen is yet another highly-regarded Scottish football figure to be struck by the disease.

Celtic icon Jimmy Johnstone died following a five-year fight in 2006.
