David Hagen appeal stepped up as former Rangers midfielder 'deteriorates' with motor neurone disease battle

A charity appeal in aid of ex-Rangers and Hearts star David Hagen has been stepped up amid his battle with motor neurone disease.

The former midfielder, who also played for Falkirk, Clyde, Livingston, Peterhead and Bo'ness United, was diagnosed with the incurable illness in 2018 aged just 45.

Rangers Youth Development Company director Colin Stewart revealed on Twitter that Hagen was now in hospital after his condition worsened.

The Rangers Former Player Benevolent Club is raising funds to support Hagen and his family and Stewart urged fans to help reach the £5000 target.

He wrote: "Sadly Davie has deteriorated. He's now in hospital & can no longer speak or support his head.

"The Former Players Charity is raising £5,000 to give to Davie's family to help with costs.

"We're roughly £700 short. If you can spare a few ££s then Thank You"

The appeal was met with almost £100 within 15 minutes of his post.

Hagen is the second former Rangers player to be diagnosed with MND in recent years after Fernando Ricksen 's six-year fight against the muscle-wasting condition.

Ricksen passed away in September at St Andrew's Hospice in Airdrie and his death brought tributes from across the world of football.

Celtic icon Jimmy Johnstone also succumbed to the disease in 2006, as did former Dundee and Ross County player John McGlashan in 2018.
