David Griffin calls Zion Williamson ‘an extremely athletic Draymond Green’

In just one season in college, Zion Williamson established himself as one of the best prospects over at least the last decade. There were many things that led to him being so highly-touted but one that stuck out the most was his versatility.

Williamson has the ability to play multiple positions as he can defend the rim while also being able to hit long-range shots extending out to the three-point line. He also has terrific passing and playmaking ability.

All of that paired together has drawn some comparisons to Draymond Green, a player with a similar build and skillset, though obviously more advanced. In a recent interview with The Athletic, Pelicans general manager David Griffin also compared Williamson to Green.

The thing about Zion, though, that excites us is, it’s not that he’s going to carry you offensively, it’s that he’s going to be able to facilitate offense. If you look at him as an extremely athletic Draymond Green type who may be able to facilitate all things for others and get out in transition and make plays … that’s exciting.

Aside from some obvious questions about tampering, this isn’t a comparison that is too far off.  Green is more advanced in every way aside from maybe pure athleticism but it’s a similar archetype for the player he is.

Williamson could become something far bigger than Green but for now, it’ll be interesting to see if the Pelicans, early in his career, use Williamson in a similar fashion to how Golden State uses Green.
