David Gray is returning to Cork next summer.
The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter will play the Rebel County on Saturday, June 20.
The gig is part of his White Ladder 20th Anniversary Tour celebrating the biggest selling album of all time in Ireland and will be performed in its entirety by the original band members.
Speaking at the Metropole Hotel on Leeside today, Gray said that Cork is a special place for him to play and that he is always embraced by the crowds here, Cork Beo reports.
He said: “It is moving when everyone is singing along. What happened (in my career) was beyond what was rational. This feels like the right time to celebrate.”
Gray said he is looking forward to playing in Cork because of its “wild, raw and uncompromising character.”
Many were delighted at the news that the Brit award winner is coming back to Cork but a lot of people were also left underwhelmed by promoter MCD’s announcement of the “major gig”.
Facebook user Niall said: “Managed to just about sellout the Marquee last summer. Interesting notion of ‘major’”.
Another reader also seemed to call in to question the use of the word “major” in the announcement, saying: “Wow, incredible news for Cork. Move over Michael Jackson”.
More gigs are expected to be announced for Irish Independent Park next summer with acts already confirmed for next year including The Script, Lewis Capaldi, Dermot Kennedy and Picture This.
MCD have said that they hope to host eight concerts at the venue next summer and as this is the fifth gig to be announced, more big names are expected.
Tickets go on sale this Friday at 9am from Ticketmaster and are priced at €49.90.
