David Gray blasts referee as Hibs boss says Celtic got away with 'blatant' penalty call in Premier Sports Cup win

Gutted Hibs manager David Gray insists Celtic got away with a "blatant" penalty as they lifted the League Cup.

The capital club were 2-1 down and chasing an equaliser when Ryan Porteous appeared to be pushed in the back by Carl Starfelt.

Paul Hanlon fired over in the melee after that flashpoint but Hibs couldn't get level and Kyogo Furuhashi 's brace was enough to take the trophy to Parkhead.

While the interim manager admitted his side should have defended better, he insists referee John Beaton two big calls wrong.

Gray told Premier Sports: "There were big moments in the game.

"For the life of me, I can't really understand how... even for their goal, the second goal, we defended very poorly but I don't understand how it's a foul in the first place.

"He gives a foul for that and I don't understand how he can then miss the penalty on Ryan Porteous."If one's a foul....

"I think it's a blatant push in the box.

"These are things that happen in football and obviously we need to defend better."

Pundit Ally McCoist agreed on that score - despite admitting he didn't see it at the time.

He said: "I think it is a penalty.

"But come on, if you take your chances you don't deserve to win the game or get back in the game.

"Moving on, it comes to Hanlon, he's got to keep it down. He doesn't and that's the chance gone."
