David Goodwillie 'deal' collapses as Australian club perform u-turn

David Goodwillie's proposed move to Australian side Sorrento FC has been torn up, after the Perth club reacted to a backlash from fans.

The 34-year-old former Clyde, Dundee United and Aberdeen striker was found guilty of rape by a civil court in 2017 and in January 2022 controversially signed for Raith Rovers, but they were forced into a u-turn after staff quit the club, fans vowed to stay away, and main sponsor Val McDermid pulled funding.

Sorrento FC announced the arrival of former Blackburn Rovers star Goodwillie, but then confirmed that he now won't travel to Australia.

A statement issued by the club read: "David was scheduled to arrive in Perth within the next week to commence playing with the club for the remainder of the 2023 NPLM season.

"The arrangement was non-commercial in nature.

"The club was has informed David of its decision and apologises to anyone in our football and broader community that may have been caused offence by his signing."

A similar situation arose when Goodwillie 'signed' for English non-league side Radcliffe, who apologised for a "significant misstep" and released him after just one game.
