David Goodwillie Clyde 'frustration' reveled by boss Danny Lennon after Montrose hat-trick heroics

Clyde boss Danny Lennon heaped praise on hat-trick hero David Goodwillie after the win over Montrose.

The Bully Wee boss admits the skipper had endured a frustrating start to the League One campaign but put that behind him in the 3-2 win at Broadwood.

Russell McLean and Chris Mochrie had levelled twice for the visitors, but Goodwillie was the difference in the end in Cumbernauld.

After a run of five consecutive defeats in the league and Betfred Cup, Lennon was delighted with the showing of his side yesterday.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "Although the results weren't great, there were lots of things for us to build upon from the performances against Kilmarnock and Dunfermline.

"We had the chance to get back on the training park in the past week to iron out one or two wrinkles and the boys for long periods of the game yesterday managed that, particularly from middle to front.

"Both teams were not settling for a point and were going for it, and the pleasing aspect for us was that we effectively had to go and win the game three times yesterday, and on the back of the results we've had the boys showed real character.

"There was a lot of good individual performances as well as a good team performance, but anyone who scores a hat-trick deserves praise.

"I've seen the frustration of David in recent weeks. It's been the longest period of frustration I have seen since I have worked with the boy.

"Not in terms of not scoring, but maybe more in the lack of chances he has had, but yesterday he was hungry.

"With every goal he scored he was back to the player we know best.

"If you look at the quality of his goals, he is so strong and quick for the first, and we were trying to utilise his pace. He was strong, composed, and finished very well.

"The second one is a good counter attack and a good ball in, and David prides himself on finding that pocket off space, and it's a great header.

"On the third one it's a great run by Ross, and a great finish by David, as well as a great block back in our box by Scott Rumsby to start the counter attack."
