David Ginola has reportedly been hospitalised, French media has reported.
The former Newcastle United footballer fell ill while competing at a golf tournament, sources have claimed.
Nice-Matin reports the 49-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest at around 4:30pm (local time) on Thursday in the southern resort of Mandelieu.
The newspaper reports that he collapsed on a football pitch in the grounds of the home of Jean-Stéphane Camérini - the organiser of the Mapauto Golf Cup.
The tournament was reportedly scheduled to start later that afternoon.
He was airlifted to a local hospital but has now been transferred for treatment at a cardiology unit in the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco.
It is not currently know what caused Ginola to collapse as he was reportedly showing no signs of ill-health on Tuesday.
Ginola was signed to Newcastle United for £2.5 million in 1995.
The French footballer made a total of 195 appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton, scoring 21 goals.
He was voted the PFA Player of the Year in 1999 for his final season for Spurs, in which he helped guide the club to the League Cup.
Ginola was less distinguished at international level, however, winning only 17 caps for France.
Since retiring from the game in 2012, Ginola has worked as a pundit, notably for the BBC on Match Of The Day and on their coverage of major tournaments.
Ginola's agent could not be reached for comment.
