David Elleray to step down at end of season amid inquiry into FA referees' chief

Dvid Elleray – chair of the FA referees’ committee – is to step down at the end of the season.

It comes with the FA launching an independent investigation into the conduct of the 67-year-old former Premier League referee.

At a referees conference at St George’s Park in 2014, Elleray said to a black former FA employee, “You look rather tanned” and “Have you been down a coal mine?”.

Elleray later apologised, but witnesses to the incident claim the FA probe at the time amounted to a cover-up – an allegation the FA strenuously deny.

The organisation has since been made aware of other allegations about Elleray. The new inquiry – by a law firm – will look at any new information.
