David de Gea told he was to blame for Man Utd dropping points at Southampton

Manchester United's David de Gea should have done better in the build-up to Southampton's equalising goal at St Mary's on Saturday, according to pundit Andy Gray.

Ole Gunnar Gunnar Solskjaer's side dropped points for the third successive Premier League game as they were held 1-1 on the south coast , despite taking the lead through a fine early strike from Wales international Daniel James.

But in a disappointing United display, the visitors failed to build upon that lead, with Southampton coming back into the match in the second half.

Towering defender Jannik Vestergaard levelled with his first goal for the club when he headed home a cross from Kevin Danso, and the hosts were able to hold on for a point despite Danso being sent off for a second bookable offence in the 73rd minute.

Vestergaard's goal came about after De Gea had acrobatically pushed away an initial header from Danny Ings, with the ball then falling to Danso to cross, and former Everton forward Gray said that Spaniard should have dealt with the initial header in a more comfortable fashion.

"It’s right at him," said Gray, who was appearing as a pundit on be IN Sports.

"If it’s to the side of him okay I get that but it was pretty much straight at him.

"It wasn’t like it was a fierce shot, just a little glancing header from a corner.

"There wasn’t a great deal of pace on the ball. David de Gea in my opinion is miles good enough to have dealt with that with a catch."

United have won just one of their four Premier League matches this season, and although the point gained in Southampton lifted them up to fourth in the table, they can expect to drop down again by the end of this weekend's matches.
