David de Gea the only Manchester United star spared in damning Paul Merson verdict

David de Gea has played 'alright' - but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has big problems with this Manchester United team.

That's the scathing verdict from Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal man, Paul Merson, who has taken aim at the under-pressure United manager on a number of occasions this campaign.

United continue their floundering Premier League season against Tottenham this afternoon (5.30pm).

However, the dust has yet to really settle on their heavy and humiliating defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool, where the 5-0 scoreline might have been even worse had it not been for their long-serving Spanish goalkeeper.

De Gea has impressed between the posts since re-establishing himself as United's number one.

According to Merson, though, his 'alright' form is the only thing Solskjaer won't see as a problem right now.

Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial are, meanwhile, set to return from injury vs Tottenham - but Paul Pogba starts his three-game suspension after being shown a VAR-approved red card against Liverpool.

During his latest Sky Sports column, the former England international said: "The goalkeeper has done alright.

"David de Gea has been one of Manchester United's best players. If it wasn't for him against Atalanta and Liverpool, things could have been a lot worse. The real problem for Manchester United is who Solskjaer picks and how he sets the team up to do the job at Tottenham.

Do you agree with Merson's claim? Have your say in the comments section below.

"The only positive I can take from Sunday is that Raphael Varane didn't play. If he did play, then what options would Manchester United and Solskjaer be able to turn to next?

"I'm not saying he would have made a huge difference to the Liverpool result, but you could make an argument that he might be able to tighten the team up on his return."
