David de Gea speaks out on his issues with penalty rules and VAR this season

David de Gea says he cannot understand why teams are allowed to switch penalty takers if a spot-kick is retaken.

The Manchester United goalkeeper saved Jordan Ayew's penalty for Crystal Palace in the opening game of the season but was adjudged by VAR to have been off of his line when the kick was taken.

It meant Palace were able to retake the kick and Wilfried Zaha stepped up to put the second spot-kick past De Gea.

Whilst De Gea was frustrated to have been penalised for being off his line, he can understand why it was retaken.

Yet the Spaniard says it is not right for a different player to take the second penalty, arguing that it takes the pressure off of the original taker.

He told BT Sport: "I think it was a little unfair. I was only a tiny bit forward.

"But hey. That's the rule.

"I don't get why they're allowed to change the player that takes it. It takes the pressure away from the player who missed the first time."

De Gea again faced a spot-kick in United's second Premier League game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Neal Maupay stepped up to score and it was noticeable how far behind his line De Gea was before the kick was taken, perhaps in response to the Crystal Palace incident.
